We are excited to have received a large order of ripe, fragrant QUINCE from Beechwood Orchards. The tropical, floral flavors and pear-like texture of these old-fashioned fruit are brought out only through cooking. Quince make a wonderful addition to fruit pies, tarts, and sauces, are delicious poached whole, or can be simmered into jelly or butter.
Rineer Family Farms have promised us a steady supply of BRUSSELS SPROUTS this week, with deliveries on Tuesday and Saturday.
Our first batch of NITTANY APPLES will arrive from Three Springs Orchard on Wednesday. This local favorite is crisp and sweet, delicious for eating fresh and great baked.
Overbrook Herb Farm will be bringing us some interesting new items on Friday morning, including: FRESH CHERVIL (a frilly anise-scented parley-relative), HERB WOOD for smoking and grilling, and DRIED LEMON VERBENA HERBAL TEA.
Looking for a hearty, delicious and fast weeknight meal? Try Griggstown Quail Farm’s CHICKEN & TURKEY PIES or Jamison Farm’s LAMB PIES. We received our first batch of the turkey pies last week, and they met such rave reviews that we are now offering both sizes. The lamb pies are a staff favorite, and though they look small, are so rich and meaty that they can feed two with a side dish or salad. These pies will change the way you see frozen prepared foods.
Lancaster Farm Fresh dropped off the holiday season’s first EGGNOG on Tuesday. This tasty beverage is made with milk and cream from grass-fed cows.
You may have noticed the cans of 100% JERSEY-GROWN CRUSHED TOMATOES that appeared on the shelves last week. This wonderful product is the result of five NJ growers working together to convince a processer to can their tomatoes this summer. We hope to carry this product throughout the winter. The Common Market will be bringing us another unique locally processed item on Wednesday: HANDMADE APPLE BUTTER from the Bauman Family (Lancaster County), who have been using this recipe since 1892. This lovely spread is made simply by cooking apples in cider- without the addition of preservatives, thickeners or sugar.
Janina Larenas, mastermind and chef of Little Isobel Fruit Preserves, will be dropping off an abundance of mouth-watering new flavors this week, including:
WILD CRABAPPLE JELLY (made with crabapples harvested in a nearby state park, tart with a distinct black cherry flavor), SPICED APPLE CIDER JELLY ( Janina says “makes every piece of toast taste like apple pie!”), WATERMELON MINT JELLY ( bright and refreshing, a little jar of summer), PEAR SAGE PRESERVE (locally grown Bartlett pears suspended in sage jelly, exceptional flavor!), and BLACKBERRY ANISE PRESERVE (made with local blackberries). Heads up: these beautifully presented jars make wonderful gifts! |

TURKEY ORDER DEADLINES EXTENDED!
Haven’t placed your turkey order yet? Don’t fret. The ordering deadlines for Naturally Raised and Organic birds have been extended to noon Nov. 19th, and the deadline for Red Bourbon Heritage Breed has been extended to Nov. 16th!
We are gearing up for our busiest week of the year! Last year we sold 195 fresh turkeys - and this year we expect to sell even more. Even with all the craziness of sorting turkeys, stocking sweet potatoes, and making sure the cream doesn’t run out, it's all very festive and fun! Our volunteers really shine on the days leading up to thanksgiving- more than 30 people will be volunteering Monday-Wednesday alone (some working multiple 3 hour shifts)! We couldn’t make it happen without their help.
On the topic of thanksgiving: what a perfect meal for celebrating local food! So many of the ingredients for the traditional Thanksgiving meal are available from our local family farms - sweet potatoes, pumpkin and other winter squashes, collard greens, cranberries. We even have local cornmeal for those who like a cornbread stuffing! We will also be fully stocked with all your favorites like Green Meadow Farm butter & double cream, Spring Hills maple syrup, Shellbark Farms sharp chevre, eggs from pasture-raised chickens, and grass-fed raw milk.

Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Spaghetti Squash Latkes, Melted Leeks & Vanilla-Spiked Apple Sauce
For the pork:
4 oz pork loin
1 tsp vegetable oil
salt & pepper
Clean pork of all silver skin and fat.
Brush with oil and season with salt and pepper.
Place on grill until medium.
For the spaghetti squash latkes:
1 spaghetti squash
1 large onion grated
2 tbs flour
2 eggs
salt & pepper to taste
vegetable oil
Cut squash in half length wise, scoop out seeds and brush flesh with oil. Place cut side down on baking sheet and bake in 350F oven for 25 minutes. Allow to cook and scrape out flesh with a fork. Place squash in a kitchen towel and sqeeze out excess juice and discard. In a mixing bowl, add all ingredients except for oil and mix well. In a frying pan, add enough oil to cover bottom of a pan and add 1 1/2 tbs of mixture to oil and pan fry until golden brown.
For melted leeks:
1 leek
1 tbs butter
2 tbs vegetable stock
salt & pepper
Remove green top and root from leek, keeping only the white bottoms. Cut in half and rinse under cold water to remove any dirt. Slice the leeks in thin half moons. Melt butter over medium heat, add leeks and stock, turn heat to low and cook for 10 minutes until complety translucent without adding any color.
Seaon with salt and pepper.
For vanilla-spiked apple sauce:
5 granny smith apples
1/2 vanilla bean, split and scraped
1/4 sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
salt & pepper
2 tbs butter
Peel, core and rough chop apples. Toss with remaining ingredients except for butter. Melt butter over medium heat and add apple mixture. Once apples begin to carmelize, about 10 minutes, remove from heat and process in blender. Season with salt and pepper.
