New This Week: |

Pecan Meadow Farm will deliver our first batch of MALLARD DUCK EGGS, dressed MUSKOVY DUCKS, and even a few GOOSE EGGS on Thursday morning. MALLARD EGGS are not much bigger than chicken eggs, but they pack a serious punch! Their incredibly rich yolks are packed with fat, protein and nutrients and are great for frying, scrambling, or using in baked goods. GOOSE EGGS are also much richer than chicken eggs, as well as much larger. Some people say that they taste as if they’ve been cooked with cream! MUSOVY DUCKS are known for their tender, full-flavored meat, which is 50% leaner than that of Mallard or Pekin ducks. They also have a very high ratio of breast meat, making them very popular with both chefs and home cooks.
Keswick Creamery’s Thursday delivery will provide the Farmstand with its first taste of their delicious CHOCOLATE PUDDING made from the milk of their own grass-fed, Jersey cows. This classic treat is everything pudding should be: chocolaty, creamy, and not too sweet. Also arriving from Keswick: our first wheel of BLUE SUEDE MOO, a creamy, velvety raw milk blue cheese.
Hendricks Farm & Dairy’s delicious aged cow’s milk cheeses will be returning the Farmstand on Friday. Delivered this week will be: BAVARIAN SWISS (an American Cheese Society Gold Medal winner in 2006, savory and addictive), PUB CHEDDAR (aged at least 8 months, distinctive and crumbly), “PARMESAN” (wonderfully grateable with lovely caramel undertones) and WILD CHILD (a new soft blue cheese).
Liz Begosh of Philadelphia’s Betty's Tasty Buttons makes her artisan sweets with fresh butter and goat’s milk, local honey and herbs, organic sugar, and fair-trade chocolate. Check out her festively packaged EASTER FUDGE BOXES filled with uniquely flavored HANDMADE GOATS MILK FUDGE this week at the stand. |

Message from Sarah Cain, Farmstand Co-Manager |

Well, this has been an interesting couple of weeks! On Friday, April 3, Federal Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack came to Reading Terminal to hold a press conference and announce that, on April 1, monthly benefits for the 32.2 million recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) increased. SNAP is the new name as of October '08 for the Food Stamp Program. The increase was included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) and will help people purchase nutritious foods and stimulate the economy. The increase will average about $80 per month, per family of four.
Paul Steinke, RTM General Manager, said in his weekly email to merchants, "After his news conference yesterday, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack toured the Market and was joined part way through by Mayor Michael Nutter. The Secretary went on a bit of a shopping spree, buying cheese and mushrooms from the Fair Food Farmstand, ground beef from Martin's Meats (with Bassetts dry ice to keep it fresh), applesauce from Momma's Home Made, and produce from Iovine Bros. He paid for everything himself and departed with a full Reading Terminal Market shopping bag. It was a great honor to have the Secretary visit the Market to announce the expansion of food stamp benefits as part of the President's economic stimulus program. Fun Fact: According to the USDA, Reading Terminal Market redeems more food stamps than anyplace else in Pennsylvania - 15 merchants and $1.1 million in 2008!"
Also see the article about Sec Vilsack's visit in the Inquirer. Scroll through the pictures to see one of the Secretary shopping at the Farmstand with our Executive Director, Ann Karlen!

Standing with the Secretary are (left to right) SNAP recipients Samantha Hayes, Christina Koch, U. S. Congressman from Pennsylvania, Chaka Fattah,
Secretary Tom Vilsack, Iovine brothers Jimmy and Vinny, and Reading Terminal Market General Manager, Paul Steinke.

Curried Egg Salad Recipe
5 eggs (take your pick from the variety we have at the 'Stand now)
1 1/2 teaspoons curry powder (your favorite)
3 tablespoons plain yogurt
2 big pinches of salt
1/2 small onion, chopped (can be yellow or red)
1/2 medium apple, chopped
1/4 cup pecans, toasted and chopped
1 small bunch of chives, minced
First off, you need to boil the eggs properly (the key to good egg salad!). Place the eggs in a pot and cover with cold water by a 1/2-inch or so. Bring to a gentle boil. Now turn off the heat, cover, and let sit for exactly seven minutes. Have a big bowl of ice water ready and when the eggs are done cooking and place them in the ice bath for three minutes or so - long enough to stop the cooking.
While the eggs are boiling and cooling, combine the yogurt, curry powder and salt in a tiny bowl. Set aside.
Crack and peel each egg, and place in a medium mixing bowl. Add the curried yogurt, onions, apple, pecans, and chives. Now mash with a fork. Don't overdo it, you want the egg mixture to have some texture. If you need to add a bit more plain yogurt to moisten up the mixture a bit, go for it a bit at a time. taste and add more salt if needed. Enjoy as-is, or served wrapped in lettuce or between two slices of good, toasted bread.
