Left to right: Nora Dowd-Eisenhower, former PA Department of Aging Secretary and Fair Food Farmstand volunteer; Frank Jurbala, Director of PDA’s Bureau of Market Development; Bill and Debbie Bryant, Calkins Creamery in Wayne County; Paul Steinke, Manager of Reading Terminal Market; Sec. Wolff; Ann Karlen, Executive Director of Fair Food; and Sarah Cain, Fair Food Farmstand Co-Manager.
See Sarah's message below. Photo: Jean Kummer.

Add a hint of summer barbeque to a hearty sandwich or Eggs Benedict with Green Meadow Farm’s new CANADIAN BACON. This ready-to-eat treat is sliced from whole pork loin that is salt and sugar cured, then double smoked for maximum smoky goodness. Delicious with mustard and sauerkraut!

Ruth came across Pecan Meadows Farm’s delicious FRUIT & HONEY GRANOLA during Otterbein Acres’ Open Barn last month and set out to obtain some for the Farmstand. Those of you who have been looking for a chewier granola will love this moist cereal packed with dried fruit, sunflower seeds and almonds. Lightly sweetened with pure maple syrup and honey.

Message from Sarah Cain, Farmstand Co-Manager

Last week we had the pleasure of hosting the PA Secretary of Agriculture, Dennis Wolf at the Reading Terminal Market. The Secretary brought Frank Jurbala, Director of PDA's Bureau of Market Development as well as Jean Kummer, PDA's Deputy Press Secretary, with him and Jean took lots of really nice photos in the Market with many of the merchants. Photo at right: Albert Yee.

This was the first time the Secretary had spent quality time in the Market, and his group was there for about 4 hours. Farmstand Volunteer Nora Dowd Eisenhower helped facilitate this visit to highlight both the work of both Fair Food and the Farmstand, as well as promote our impending expansion and move within the Market. As we toured the Market, Paul Steinke, General Manager of RTM, regaled the Secretary with stories of the Market's past and introduced him to several vendors, many of whom represent multiple family generations within the building. The Secretary¹s team came away with lots of goodies!

We were very happy that a few of the farmers we work with could also join the meeting. Angela Evans, of Oley Valley Mushrooms made a delivery while the Secretary was there. In fact, he was already very familiar with her mushrooms, as they win many awards every year at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Also there were the Bryant's, who are dairy farmers and the parents of Cheese-maker Emily Montgomery (Calkins Creamery). In a further display of stars aligning, it turned out that the Bryant's other daughter is the best friend of
Jean, and Jean was in her wedding! That was a fun reunion to witness. We ended the visit by having roast pork sandwiches from DiNic's, which satisfied Frank Jurbala - his mouth had been watering since the moment they stepped inside of the Market. All three were very impressed with Reading Terminal and the work of Fair Food, and had some excellent suggestions and insight into grants that we might apply for to further fund our mission.

Glazed Turnips

Great accompaniment to roasted meats/poultry and sautéed greens.

Active time: 20 min Start to finish: 35 min
Yield: Makes 4 servings

2 lb small to medium turnips (either Purple-Top or Gold Ball work great)
About 1 1/2 cups plus 3 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons butter
1-2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon salt

Garnish: chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley

Peel turnips, then halve horizontally and quarter halves. Arrange turnips in 1 layer in a 12-inch heavy skillet and add enough water (about 1 1/2 cups) to reach halfway up turnips. Add butter, sweetener, and salt and boil over moderately high heat, covered, stirring occasionally, 10 minutes. Boil turnips, uncovered, stirring, until tender and water has evaporated, about 8 minutes.

Sauté turnips over moderately high heat, stirring, until golden brown, about 5 minutes more. Add 3 tablespoons water and stir to coat turnips with glaze.
