Radishes abound at the Farmstand!

It may be hard to believe, but the Farmstand received a big batch of surprisingly tasty RED TOMATOES from Butter Valley Harvest on Wednesday. Butter Valley grew these beauties in their fancy geothermally-heated greenhouses without the use of chemical pesticides.

We are sorry to report that Natural Acres Farm will no longer be delivering to Philadelphia. They have decided to restructure their business, and will focus on on-farm sales of their beef for the time being. We expect to continue to stock their organic grass-fed beef (they are willing to ship to us), but as of this week, we no longer have access to their baked goods, eggs and dairy products. Swiss Villa Dairy will be distributing their own milk soon, so expect to see that back on the shelves shortly.

As most of you know, the Farmstand is going to be expanding and moving!!!
We'll be taking over the old Rick's Cheesesteaks spot up at the front of the Market on the 12th street side. This a huge honor and a huge undertaking for the 'little Farmstand that could!' Our new location will be a little more than twice our current size, bringing us to just over 700 square feet. While that sounds like a big leap - it is, but can I see a show of hands for those of you out there who remember the original Farmstand? Ann (and Joe!), with a folding card table, one day a week in Center Court (see photo at left )... and then the slow progressive expansion to where we are now - a full-time, 6-day a week permanent vendor. As spring does its best to come upon us, with it's avalanche of veggies and fruit, we are bracing to find room for it all. Yes, it did seem like a long winter, but isn't it amazing how much we continued to be able to offer? As our local growers start to step up, fufilling our winter needs with greenhouse and hydroponic methods, you'll see even more in the years to come. Already there are so many other items we could be carrying and producers we could be working with... but we just don't have the room. With our new location and size, you can look forward to even more local goodness!


SAVE THE DATE!
Fund raising for the expansion has been going well, and we have raised $168,000 of the $215,000 that we need. That does mean that we still need to raise $47,000 to be where we want to be. To help us get there, we are throwing a Fund Raising Party on Thurs, May 28 - in the new space in the Reading Terminal Market, after hours, from 6:30-9:30pm. For a sliding scale price of $10-20, you can join us for artisanal cheese, local beer, chocolate, door prizes and a raffle! Meet some of our farmers, chat with our staff and volunteers and network with other like-minded customers! So Save the Date and we'll have more details next week!

Look At The Company We Keep! As many of our customers know, Fair Food's reach goes beyond the Farmstand in the Reading Terminal Market. Last week, Fair Food was named one of Greater Philadelphia's Local Food Economy Leaders by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC). We'll be honored along with The Food Trust, Weavers Way and Greensgrow at DVRPC’s annual dinner on May 14th. The award recognizes these four organizations for successfully leveraging collaborations with other stakeholders to create a more sustainable food system, and for garnering national attention, making this region a leader in local food system efforts. This award is the first part of a new technical and financial assistance program DVRPC is creating in partnership with the William Penn Foundation.

Green Village Fundraising Events
Earth Month Fundraiser
Green Village Philadelphia
is hosting a month long fundraising event in partnership with Philadelphia Brewing Company (PBC), who is selling its spring beer, Fleur de Lehigh, at a discount to participating bars. Green Village will receive $1 from every pint sold - until the brew runs out.
Participating Bars: Devil's Den, South Philly Tap Room, The Abbaye, Grace Tavern, Earth Bread and Brewery, The Royal Tavern, Johnny Brendas, Standard Tap, The Dive.
April 15th - May 15th.

Cost: $25 minimum per ticket. Family friendly. Kids under 16 get in free.

Arugula & 'Canadian Bacon' Pizza with Tomatoes!

Sautéed onions, the Farmstand's 'canadian bacon' and Cherry Grove's 'Primavera Toma' cheese flavor this white pizza. Topping the hot-out-of-the-oven pizza with fresh greens and diced tomatoes gives it a delicious twist. Pre-made pizza dough keeps it quick.

Makes 6 servings

1 pound prepared pizza dough, preferably whole-wheat
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 medium onion, halved and thinly sliced
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1 cup shredded Cherry Grove 'Primavera Toma'
2 cups packed coarsely chopped arugula
1 cup chopped tomato
Optional: 2 ounces very thinly sliced 'canadian bacon,' cut into thin strips (about 1/2 cup)

1. Position oven rack in the lowest position; preheat to 450°F. Coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray.

2. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to about the size of the baking sheet. Transfer to the baking sheet. Bake until puffed and lightly crisped on the bottom, 8 to 10 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add onion, bacon and crushed red pepper and cook, stirring, until the onion is beginning to brown, about 3 minutes.

4. Spread the onion mixture evenly over the crust and top with cheese. Bake until crispy and golden and the cheese is melted, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and top with arugula and tomato
