Appropriately timed for this bout of cool fall-like weather, the summer’s first pomme fruit arrived at the stand on Tuesday. Beechwood Orchard brought us two early varieties of apple: crisp and juicy SUMMER RAMBO APPLES (great raw or baked into pies or tarts) and subtly sweet GINGER GOLD APPLES (perfect for eating out of hand). Kauffman’s Fruit Farm is supplying us with CLAPP’S FAVORITE PEARS, an American Heirloom variety developed in Massachusett’s in the 19th century, known for its aromatic and tender flesh.
On Wednesday, The Common Market will bring us GROUND CHERRIES, an unusual fruit that grows as a weed all over this region. These little fruits look like (and are related to) tomatillos, but have a distinct flavor some describe as “tomato crossed with pineapple”. They are used to make delicious pies and jams, or can be eaten fresh.
Get out those saucepans! The first of the Red Plum (aka. Roma) Tomatoes will be coming from Lancaster Farm Fresh Coop (Tuesday) and Green Meadow Farm (Thurday).
We will get two new breads from Four World’s Bakery on Friday: WHOLE SPELT CHALLAH (light yet chewy, a treat for those sensitive to wheat) and MULTIGRAIN LEVAIN (complex and nutty, great slathered with butter or as the base for a sandwich).

New producer for the Farmstand, Four Worlds Bakery, is an eco-friendly, artisan bakery based in West Philadelphia at the Kaffa Crossing Café. Baker Michael "Challahman" Dolich, former baker at Le Bec-Fin Restauant, is very passionate about baking the highest quality products without compromising his commitment to the environment.
Four Worlds Bakery uses certified organic grains and/or locally produced alternatives- such as spelt, wheat, cranberries, butter, and milk. Baker Michael Dolich also mills all of the flours from whole kernels on site. And that's not all! Aside from a few select retail spots, like the 'Stand, Four Worlds only sells their bread in advance via an online and telephone ordering system, to maximize freshness and reduce waste. The bakery will soon be running on wind power and even moved into their new space with help from the West Philadelphia Pedal Co-op.

Come visit this beautiful 110-acre preserved farm located alongside the Pequea Creek. Protected from development by the Lancaster Farmland Trust, the Rineer family has ensured that their land will remain available for agricultural purposes alone for generations to come. Daryl Rineer will show us his family's diversified vegetable and beef farm where we will visit the pasture-raised cows and learn about the benefits of a grass-based diet to animal health and happiness. You'll be able to taste the difference yourself when we have some of Rineer Family Farm's own Black Angus beef burgers at our picnic!
Ticket price includes a deliciously fresh and local picnic, and a donation to Fair Food.
Prices: $25 Adult, $12 Child (6-13). Kids under 6 are free. FMNP (WIC or Seniors) participants receive a 50% discount.

Oven Dried Tomatoes
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 6 hours
Yield: 2 cups
Ingredients:
5 pounds Roma (oval) tomatoes
Fine sea salt
Preparation:
Preheat oven to 200 degrees, or the lowest setting possible.
Trim and discard the stem ends of the tomatoes. Halve each tomato lengthwise. Arrange the tomatoes, cut side up, side by side and crosswise on cake racks set on the oven racks. Do not allow the tomatoes to touch one another. Sprinkle lightly with salt.
Place in the oven and bake until the tomatoes are shriveled and feel dry, anywhere from 6 to 12 hours. Check the tomatoes from time to time: They should remain rather flexible, not at all brittle. Once dried, remove the tomatoes from the oven and allow them to thoroughly cool on cake racks. (Smaller tomatoes will dry more quickly than larger ones. Remove each tomato from the oven as it is dried.)
Transfer the tomatoes to zipper-lock bags. The tomatoes will last
indefinitely.
Important Note: The end product must be perfectly dry but not crispy, with no inner moisture in order to avoid bacteria growth. Oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes with fresh herbs or garlic added must be refrigerated.
